Puka Beach: Boracay’s Quieter Gem

While most people flock to the iconic White Beach, Puka Beach offers something a bit different: serenity, nature, and a more rugged beauty. If you want a break from the crowds, bigger resorts, and loud nightlife, this is a strong contender.

What Makes Puka Beach Unique

  • Location & Length: Located at the northern tip of Boracay, Puka Beach (also called Puka Shell Beach because of the shells that used to be abundant along the shore) is about 800 meters long. The Boracay Beach Guide+2Guide to the Philippines+2
  • Sand & Shore: The sand is less powdery than at White Beach. It’s coarser due to bits of crushed coral and sometimes shells mixed in. That gives it a different texture underfoot but still very beautiful. The Boracay Beach Guide+2Traveloka+2
  • Atmosphere: Much more relaxed. Fewer commercial establishments, fewer beach vendors, less crowding. It’s more natural, quieter, great for people who want to chill, read, take pictures, swim in peace. Boracay Insider+2Boracay Compass+2
  • Water & Currents: Be aware — water tends to get deep quickly, and currents can be stronger than at some shallow beaches. Not the best for casual wading far out or for non-swimmers in some spots. balukootravel.com+2Traveloka+2

My Ideal Day at Puka Beach

Here’s how I’d plan it if I were going for a chill-day:

  1. Leave early from where I’m staying — arrive by 7-8 AM to enjoy the morning calm.
  2. Bring a picnic pack (fruit, sandwiches, drinks), beach towel, sunblock.
  3. Walk the stretch, look for puka shells (especially near low tide).
  4. Swim, lounge, read a book, maybe explore the fringes.
  5. Lunch at one of the beach shacks or bring something.
  6. Stay for golden hour, enjoy the sunset, then head back before it gets too dark (transport might be trickier).
